How many times have you heard the term "burnout" or heard "I'm burned out" ??
Burnout is an extremely common ailment in today's world, especially among Entrepreneurs! and is certainly not linked to a specific month or time of year! People who burn both sides of the candle, do so when they either work non stop for days or even weeks on end or when they "party" hard over and over and then try to put the same level of intensity into their work.
There are a number of more serious conditions linked to or might have started out as "Burnout", such as chronic fatigue, M.E, Adrenal fatigue etc. and there is also the emerging theme of "Entrepreneur Fatigue". These conditions have become so prevalent in today's Western World, it has become "everyday terms". Burnout can be described quite simply - if you expel more energy than you absorb or create then you become tired and you will, "burnout".
Burnout is the feeling of constant tiredness on a physical, mental and emotional level. Every episode of burnout may display the same characteristics like low energy, sluggish, poor sleep, irritation, even depression but one must not forget that this is the symptom, the true cause can be unique to the individual. Each case of burnout must be treated individually. As you will see below in this blogpost the causes are many.
Overall our best advice is to make sure you take some time to rest, relax and do some things that are FUN!!! We know, being Entrepreneurs ourselves, that having your own business and loving what you do, doesn't always seem like "work".. BUT having NO DOWNTIME is never a good idea!! No matter how much you love what you do!
Recently we had a meeting with a very successful businessman and a longtime friend called Ger. Ger is also a proud Limerick man and has been in business for himself well over 30 years. He has developed many incredible global products which would be very well known! We both sat listening to so many stories he shared with us, from working with some of the biggest corporations back in the 80's and 90's and surviving 3 heart attacks! (all in one day!), to the challenges and wins, he had over the years!
At some point, we had to stop him and ask him this important question! Ger, how do you deal with or prevent "Burnout"? He simply answered by sharing the following wise words...

One last tip we would love to share with you to help with burnout is to write down how you are feeling and express things on paper. Things like, I am feeling angry because... I feel feed up because... I feel stressed over... etc) You will be surprised at what might flow from your pen to paper. Give it a go!
