What is Burn Out?


How many times have you heard the term "burnout"  or heard  "I'm burned out" ?? 

Burnout is an extremely common ailment in today's world, especially among Entrepreneurs! and is certainly not linked to a specific month or time of year! People who burn both sides of the candle, do so when they either work non stop for days or even weeks on end or when they "party" hard over and over and then try to put the same level of intensity into their work.

There are a number of more serious conditions linked to or might have started out as "Burnout", such as chronic fatigue, M.E, Adrenal fatigue etc. and there is also the emerging theme of "Entrepreneur Fatigue". These conditions have become so prevalent in today's Western World, it has become "everyday terms". Burnout can be described quite simply - if you expel more energy than you absorb or create then you become tired and you will, "burnout".

Burnout is the feeling of constant tiredness on a physical, mental and emotional level. Every episode of burnout may display the same characteristics like low energy, sluggish, poor sleep, irritation, even depression but one must not forget that this is the symptom, the true cause can be unique to the individual. Each case of burnout must be treated individually. As you will see below in this blogpost the causes are many.

So first, some Symptoms of Burnout

  • Feeling tired even after you've had a night's sleep.
  • Poor sleep.
  • No drive to do the things you like.
  • Concentration levels can slip dramatically.
  • Feeling depressed, anxious even angry.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Lower back pain may be experienced due to your adrenals being overloaded.

Possible causes of Burnout

  • You may be over working in your job and not getting enough regenerative sleep,
  • You may be eating foods that you are unable to digest effectively and secretly allergic to.
  • You may be dehydrated on a cellular level.
  • Your adrenal glands may be overloaded by shock, trauma or even emotionally overloaded.
  • You may have a virus or a bacterial infection like an overgrowth of candida.
  • Your thyroid function may be impaired.
  • You may be doing too much in your daily life's activities, ( over engagement )
  • You may also feel "burnout" through ( disengagement )
  • Mental burnout from over thinking can cause huge anxiety and stress.
  • Excessively high-stress hormones once depleted lead to burnout.
  • Worrying about issues you can't control, for example, the weather, other people's lives and opinions etc. This is effectively giving energy to what you don't want, leading to BURNOUT

How to treat or prevent Burnout

  • The first step is to find out what is causing you to feel "burned out". Go and seek advice from a trusted GP or health practitioner.
  • Eat foods that contain energy. A good way to look at this is, if the food can be put in the ground and grown then there is energy in it, eg, fruit, vegetables. If it cannot then there is no energy in it. 
  • Eat like a grazer, small amounts more often instead of large meals once or twice a day.
  • Stay hydrated! Increase your water intake. 
  • Reduce your amount of stimulants eg. Coffee, sugar, and gluten.
  • Set aside at least half an hour every day for You.
  • Spend more time in nature, do some energy work ie. Bioenergy, Craniosacral therapy, Yoga, Pilates.

  • If nothing is giving you relief from the above please go and see your doctor or health practitioner. 
  • Take your MEDS!

Overall our best advice is to make sure you take some time to rest, relax and do some things that are FUN!!! We know, being Entrepreneurs ourselves, that having your own business and loving what you do, doesn't always seem like "work".. BUT having NO DOWNTIME is never a good idea!! No matter how much you love what you do! 

Recently we had a meeting with a very successful businessman and a longtime friend called Ger. Ger is also a proud Limerick man and has been in business for himself well over 30 years. He has developed many incredible global products which would be very well known! We both sat listening to so many stories he shared with us, from working with some of the biggest corporations back in the 80's and 90's and surviving 3 heart attacks! (all in one day!), to the challenges and wins, he had over the years! 

At some point, we had to stop him and ask him this important question! Ger, how do you deal with or prevent "Burnout"? He simply answered by sharing the following wise words... 

  • I don't drink alcohol
  • I don't Smoke
  • I exercise at least 3 times a week 
  • And most importantly I have FUN and I enjoy what I do! (otherwise, there is no point!)
  • I also write down a to-do-list every day, and review it in the evening, and move things I didn't get completed to the following or another day. For him, this was his secret to success. Pen to paper every single day since 1983!

One last tip we would love to share with you to help with burnout is to write down how you are feeling and express things on paper. Things like, I am feeling angry because... I feel feed up because... I feel stressed over... etc) You will be surprised at what might flow from your pen to paper. Give it a go!
